Operations Improvement Engagement · 90 Days

Scope

Engagement overview

A 90-day engagement to diagnose the bottlenecks slowing down order fulfillment and put a workable process and training in place to fix them.

Scope of work

Interviews with your operations team, a review of current workflows and tools, a redesigned process with clear ownership, and hands-on training to get the team using it.

What's not included

Software licensing, hiring, and org-wide strategy work beyond the fulfillment process are not part of this scope. Available as separate engagements.

How to write a consulting proposal

  1. 01

Name the problem before the plan

Lead with what an initial assessment or discovery call found. The specific bottleneck, not a generic 'we help businesses improve operations' pitch.

  2. 02

Break the engagement into phases with dates

Clients evaluating a consulting proposal want to see structure: discovery, redesign, rollout, support. A single lump timeline reads as less prepared.

  3. 03

List concrete deliverables, not just 'advice'

Documents, training sessions, and check-ins are things a client can point to and say 'we got that'. Vague strategic guidance is much harder to justify the invoice for.

  4. 04

Price by phase or milestone, not just a total

Breaking a large engagement fee into phase-based payments makes the total feel manageable and ties payment to visible progress.

  5. 05

State what's explicitly out of scope

Consulting engagements drift easily once you're inside a client's organization. A clear out-of-scope list protects both sides from quiet scope creep.

  6. 06

Follow up with a specific insight

Reference something concrete from the discovery conversation rather than a generic check-in. It reinforces that you understood the problem, not just the industry.

Consulting proposal FAQ

What should a consulting proposal include?

A clear engagement overview, phased scope of work, concrete deliverables per phase, timeline, and pricing tied to milestones rather than a single lump sum.

How long should a consulting proposal be?

One to two pages. Enough to show the phases and deliverables clearly, without turning into a full strategy deck before the engagement has even started.

How do I price a consulting engagement?

Fixed-fee by phase is common for defined engagements like this one; open-ended advisory work is often better priced as a monthly retainer or hourly rate instead.

When should I follow up after sending a consulting proposal?

Within a week, referencing a specific point from the discovery conversation. Consulting decisions often involve more than one stakeholder, so a patient, specific follow-up works better than pressure.

Should a consulting proposal include an hourly rate for out-of-scope work?

Yes. Stating a specific hourly rate for anything outside the defined phases (as above) prevents awkward negotiation later when the client asks for 'just one more thing'.

How detailed should the assessment phase be before pricing the rest?

Detailed enough to name the specific problem, but the later phases can stay at a roadmap level. Some consultants price the assessment phase separately and scope the rest once findings are in.
